Historical Notes

This game was exported to Italy as Gottlieb's 1972 'Play Pool'. The replay versions of this game are the 2-player Gottlieb's 1974 'Big Shot' and the 4-player Gottlieb's 1973 'Hot Shot'. We note that the three color backglass images in this listing all differ from each other in colors used. The manufacturer's flyer picture is black-and-white so we cannot make a color comparison with it. The backglass attributed to Russ Jensen shows the man on the left having two-toned hair, possibly a reddish color alongside the obvious blue. The man pointing his finger has hair that is both red and white. Two of the three monotone figures on the background appear to be more of a tapioca color and not the light green as seen on the other glasses, but this often can be attributed to differences in the camera and photography. The Gottlieb logo and the number 1 to 10 also are also tapioca in color. We make minor note that the large semicircles of color in the background look red, dark red, and blue. Again, these shades may have been affected by the camera in this older photograph. The backglass attributed to Vic Camp also shows the man on the left having two-toned hair, this time more visibly a reddish color alongside the obvious blue. The man pointing his finger has hair that is both red and white. The large semicircles of color in the background look orange, dark red, and blue. The people in the background are lighter shades of green. This glass is inexplicable missing the large white "Previous High Score" box seen in the manufacturer's flyer. We carefully notice on the other glasses that the lower left corner of this white box barely extends beyond the lower edge of the pool table, if one looks closely. On this glass, we notice a possible "bump" in what should otherwise be a straight line depicting the lower edge of the pool table and this "bump" seems to appear exactly where that lower left corner of the white box would extend. All this to say that perhaps this backglass was altered after-factory to remove its "Previous High Score" box. In this image, we do tend to see a different shade of green in that area of the pool table's felt covering and nearby an odd dotted line defining the top edge of the table. Inspection of the reverse side of the glass in this area might support our speculation of an after-factory alteration. The backglass attributed to Sell It Now was obtained at a swap meet and installed into the machine shown here. It shows the man on the left having hair entirely blue. The man pointing his finger has hair that is entirely white. The face in the lower right corner is almost entirely white, unlike the other glasses. Any white areas may have once been red but then bleached out due to red fade, often a very selective occurrence leaving other shades of red untouched. The large semicircles of color in the background are blue and white only. We don't know why these differences exist. All three backglasses bear the Gottlieb copyright mark.
