Historical Notes
Most of the mechanical and playfield parts are copies of Gottlieb parts, even using same coil numbers. Some playfield plastics show artwork previously seen on the backglasses of Gottlieb's 1977 'Vulcan' and Gottlieb's 1977 'Cleopatra'. This game was distributed in England by ACE, a slot machine manufacturer. To the left of the left flipper, attribution is given on the playfield to J. Martina who finalized the formula to plasticize the playfields for this and other pinball games. Jacques Martina also was a manufacturer of pinball machine conversions. Federico Croci, a collector and historian in Italy, tells us that the playfield, backglass, and plastics were manufactured in Italy by Baldazzi (a manufacturer based in Bologna, Italy) while the art was from Mike Martinelli's Pinball Shop, a graphic studio that Mike owned in those years. His signature appears on the backglass above the 3rd player's score window ("MIKE") and on the playfield just above the far left rollover button (Mike 78"). Federico confirmed that they copied Gottlieb parts almost everywhere in the game, and were made by RMG, also in Bologna, Italy. Author Lew Wallace's fictional novel Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ was first published in 1880. It has been made into a movie several times.
